Description: Green glazed composition amulet depicting the Girdle of Isis, a funerary amulet closely connected with the Osirian legend The The amulet is in the standard form, made to represent an open loop of material from whose bound lower end hangs a long sash flanked by two folded loops. Hole for suspension behind. Height: 0.8 in. (2.0 cm) Condition: Intact. Provenance: Private New England collection of an Egyptian lady who emigrated to the US in 1956. Exhibited: Amarillo Art Center, Texas, October 9, 1974-November 3, 1974 Reference: See Amulets of Ancient Egypt, p. 45, #49, for the type. Background: These amulets are thought to represent a cloth worn during mensturation, and thus symbolic of regenerative powers. The amulet was generally placed on the neck of the mummy as prescribed by Chapter 156 of the Book of the Dead. Price: SOLD
