Multiple Deity Amulet with Four Standing Cats
Circa Third Intermediate Period, 1070-712 BC
Description: Fine glazed composition amulet of rare multiple deity form featuring four standing figures with cat heads standing against a square column. Two of the cat heads with pronounced ears. The other two wearing feathers.
Height: 1.3 in. (3.3 cm)
Condition: Intact and fine. The color of the glaze lost and some minor wear.
Provenance: Private New England collection of an Egyptian lady who emigrated to the US in 1956.
Exhibited: Amarillo Art Center, Texas, October 9, 1974-November 3, 1974, as part of group of amulets (#21).
Reference: See Amulets of Ancient Egypt, by Carol Andrews, #6a for a near identical example. According to Andrews, such amulets were worn by women during their lifetime to endow them with fertility.
