Terracotta Shabti of Hu-khepesh with Polychrome Decoration

Circa 745-525 BC

Description:  Well preserved and brightly colored shabti decorated with original polychrome over pressed terracotta. A front column of hieroglyphics reads "The Osiris Hu-khepesh, Justified".

Height:  7.0 in. (17.5 cm)

Condition:  Intact as shown in photo with a single old break at the ankles, small section of loss at the break. Some wear to the polychrome in spots.

Provenance:  Private New England collection of an Egyptian lady who emigrated to the US in 1956.

Exhibited:  Amarillo Art Center, Texas, October 9, 1974-November 3, 1974, as #17, described: "Ushepti, Terra Cotta, Polychromed, 25-26th Dynasties".

Reference:  This name is not included in the standard reference, H. Ranke, Die Ägyptischen Personennamen (Glückstadt: Augustin, 1935 [Vol. 1]-1952 [Vol. 2 preface]), normally abbreviated PN.  Ranke’s compilation, though very useful, is far from complete and it is not unusual to encounter names that are not included.
