Glazed Composition Amulet of Baboon Holding BabyCirca Late Period, 712-332 BC
Description: Delightful blue glazed composition amulet depicting a mature seated baboon leaning forward to groom a baby baboon. The amulet is modeled in the round and the circular opening between the arms and the head served as the suspension loop. The underside is carved with the impression of a scarab beetle indicating the object had a dual role as both an amulet and stamp seal. Rare type. Height: 0.52 in. (1.8 cm) Condition: Some fading of the glaze, otherwise intact and fine. Provenance: Private New England collection of an Egyptian lady who emigrated to the US in 1956. Said to be ex-Howard Carter. Exhibited: Amarillo Art Center, Texas, October 9, 1974-November 3, 1974, as part of group of amulets (#21).
