Bronze Reliquary Cross Incised with St. Stephen

Circa 9th-11th Century AD    

Description:   Bronze reliquary cross (enkolpion) depicting a haloed standing figure with outstretched arms in prayer and wearing a full-length robe with ornate design. Above the figure is an inscription with the name of St. Stephen.

Height: 3.25 in. (8.3 cm) 

Condition: Intact as shown. Thick patina. Bottom attachment loops partially lost. 

Inscribed in Greek:

ΑΓΗCΤΕΦΑΝ / ΟC

        ἅγη(ος) Στέφανος = ὁ ἅγι(ος)
