South Italian Black-Glazed Askos

Circa 5th-4th Century BC

Description:  Refined well-preserved black-glazed askos -- a rare shape in black-glazed ware. The vessel has a globular body with off-center short spout with flared mouth. A short arched strap handle is attached just beneath the mouth and connects to the anterior shoulder of the body. Rests upon a low ring foot reserved underneath. The semi-lustrous black glaze is thickly applied. Finely grained orange clay.  Sometimes referred to as 'duck askos' as the shape resembles the body of a duck.

Height:  3.25 in. (8.3 cm)

Condition:  Intact with slight abrasion to the glaze as visible in photo.

Provenance:  Formerly in a private New Jersey collection.

Reference: See Sir John and Lady Beazley Gifts 1912-1966, Ashmolean Museum Department of Antiquities (London 1967), no. 403 and Greek and Italian Black-Gloss Wares and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto 1992) by John W. Hayes, no. 131 for similar black-glazed askoi.

Price:  $ 975
