South Italian Black-Glazed AskosCirca 5th-4th Century BC
Description: Refined well-preserved black-glazed askos -- a rare shape in black-glazed ware. The vessel has a globular body with off-center short spout with flared mouth. A short arched strap handle is attached just beneath the mouth and connects to the anterior shoulder of the body. Rests upon a low ring foot reserved underneath. The semi-lustrous black glaze is thickly applied. Finely grained orange clay. Sometimes referred to as 'duck askos' as the shape resembles the body of a duck. Height: 3.25 in. (8.3 cm) Condition: Intact with slight abrasion to the glaze as visible in photo. Provenance: Formerly in a private New Jersey collection.
