Ancient Shipwreck Challenges Current Theories

An ancient Greek merchant ship found more than two miles below the Mediterranean Sea will challenge modern theories about ancient trade.

According to the Associated Press, a Greek ship carrying pottery amphora from the 2/3 century BC, has been discovered on the sea floor under 10,000 feet of water. This is the deepest water find of an ancient Greek ship ever and it calls into question commonly held beliefs that Greek sailors generally navigated along coastal routes.

The discover of this wreck more than 300 miles from Corsica could cause experts to rethink ancient trade routes and debunk the contention that ancient traders did not generally venture into the open sea.

The wreck was found by a private company hired by the Israeli government to locate a submarine that went missing in 1968, according to the AP.
