New Artifact Reveals Gladiators May Have Worn Scarves

A recently found bronze and iron knife discovered in Britain is leading to speculation that Roman gladiators may have worn a fabric scarf around their neck and shoulders to prevent exposed skin from rubbing against their helmets.

The speculation is fueled by a tiny knife of iron and bronze found in the East Midlands of Britain. The knife, after being cleaned by British Museum conservators, revealed a remarkably detailed depiction of a Roman gladiator. It is thought to be the most detailed such image ever found in Britain.

The image is so detailed that examination revealed previously unknown details around the base of the helmet. While helmets similar to the one depicted on the knife have survived, any attached protective fabric would likely have decomposed within a few hundred years of burial.

The timing of the find coincided with a special exhibition on Roman Gladiatorial Spectacle being held at the British Museum. After treatment, the knife was put on special display as part of this exhibition.
