Roman Lamp with Erotic Scene

Circa 1st-2nd Century AD    

Description:   Erotic lamp in buff-colored clay depicting a lovemaking scene. The man stands to the left, his lowered right hand raising his mantle to reveal his phallus, his left hand lifting the drapery of his lover seated before him on the edge of a couch and leaning forward. Round nozzle and ring handle. The discus is framed by a raised band of chevrons and a dotted zigzag border.  Erotic scenes on oil lamps are highly collectible. 

Height:  4.25 in. (11 cm)

Condition:  Intact with extremely good impression.

Provenance:  Ex-Haddad Collection of Ancient Erotic Art, which acquired it from Nancy Mallen, London, in 1972.
