Bronze Ithyphallic Herm
Circa 1st-2nd Century AD
Description:
Bronze statuette of the god Pan in the form of an ithyphallic herm. He lifts his right hand to his goat-horned head and in his left hand holds a throwing stick (pedum). He leans slightly backwards. The modeling of the figure terminates below the phallus into what was most likely the handle of a serving implement or tool. The fine style and workmanship suggest the piece was made in Italy, perhaps Rome itself. Bronze depictions of Pan are less commonly found.
Height: 3.5 in. (8.5 cm) with stand
Condition: Lustrous dark green patina. Tip of phallus missing. Mounted on a black wooden base.
Provenance: Private Midwest collection, and once Charles Ede (no. 12, Cat 150, 1990).
