British Egyptologists Uncover Old Kingdom Pyramid

Two British archaeologists in Egypt to study an obscure Egyptian inscription have discovered a previously unknown pyramid tomb dating to the end of the Late Period or early First Intermediate Period, according to a report in The Guardian.

Mark Collier, an egyptologist at the University of Liverpool, and Bill Manley, an egyptologist at the National Museums of Scotland, made the discovery of the 2100 BC pyramid about 20 miles south of Luxor. (Collier and Manley are the co-authors of the best-selling book How to Teach Yourself Hieroglyphics: A Step-by-Step Guide)

The pair had received permission from the Egyptian supreme council of antiquities to examine a hieroglyphic panel first uncovered about 80 years ago by French archaeologists, according to the report. The panel was said to have been in a small rock-cut tomb known to be the grave of Ankhtify, a powerful regional ruler who lived around 2100 BC.

Upon surveying the site, Collier and Manley observed that contrary to the old French description, the tomb was not rock-cut but a free-standing pyramid-shaped mound. Further, they discovered that the original French expedition had only dug out a portion of the structure.  In addition, Ankhtify's tomb appears to be surrounded by an entire necropolis of additional burial chambers.
