Glass Date Flask
Circa 1st-2nd Century AD
Description: Small flask realistically rendered in the shape of a dried date made from amber-brown glass blown in a two-part mould. The long thick-walled globular body is flat on either side with relief imitating the wrinkles of a dried date which conceal the seam from the two moulds. Short smooth cylindrical neck with partially unworked, partially folded-over rim. The glass vessel is custom mounted in a black wooden stand.
Height: 2.8 in. (7.2 cm)
Condition: Intact.
Provenance: Formerly a German property.
Reference: See Ancient Glass in the Hermitage Collection (St. Petersburg 1997) by Nina Kunina nos. 146-148, color illustration 91 for three similar date flasks.
Background: Date flasks were quite popular in antiquity and probably contained a date product. It is suggested that the moulds used to create the flasks were shaped around actual dates.
