Fine Black Glazed Guttus with Face of Silen
Circa Late 4th-Early 3rd Century BC
Description: Mould-made high pedestal guttus with silen on slightly raised central medallion. The well articulated male face is in relief with peaked forehead, deep-set eyes, long broad nose and full mouth framed by a thick moustache and long wavy beard. Long curs fall in thick layers around his face, centrally parted atop his head. Encircling the central motif is a raised band and two fine incised lines. The vessel has a broad rounded body atop a very high concave tiered foot. Shoulder and belly covered with tight vertical ribbing interrupted by loop handle and tall tapered spout with wide mouth rolled over in three tiers. Thick lustrous black glaze covers body, handle, lower foot and pouring aperture. Reserved on walls and underside of foot.
Height to Spout: 4 in. (11.8 cm) Diameter: 3.75 in. 9.2 cm)
Condition: Intact with small chips from foot and minor surface chip from
handle.
Provenance: The vessel was formerly in a private Swiss collection, acquired in the 1970-80s.
Reference: See HAYES(A) no. 87 and 88 for similar gutti in the Royal Ontario Museum.
Background: Horses were a favorite subject in all media of Greek art, second only to the human figure.
