Lamp with Dolphin and Rudder

Circa 2nd Century AD    

Description:   Roman single-handled lamp with reddish- brown slip decorated with symbols of the sea. A discus of three concentric circles frames a swimming dolphin and ship's rudder in very attractive and crisp, high relief. The underside stamped with a partially worn workshop signature M[..]SI. Loeschcke Type VIII type.

Height:  4.15 in. (10.8 cm)

Condition:  Intact with some encrustation and light wear.

Provenance:  Ex-private English collection.

Reference:  See GOETHERT nos. 67 and M207 with dolphin and rudder in the Rheinischen Landesmuseums Trier.
