Superb Taweret Amulet Carved into Diorite Granite

Circa Late Period (6th-1st Century BC)

Description:  Very fine example of a carved stone amulet depicting the ancient Egyptian benevolent household deity Taweret in the form of a female hippopotamus. The amulet is carved in distinctly mottled black and white diorite granite. The figure is adorned with the usual modius headdress. Indicative of her protective role in childbirth, the figure has a clearly swollen pregnant belly.  An integral suspension loop in the back fitted with a modern gold hoop enabling the amulet to be worn on a chain.

Height:  1.25 in. (3.2 cm)

Condition:   Intact with attractive surface.

Provenance:  James Sweeney Collection (2004-2008), Ex-Fragments of Time, Ex-UK private collector who acquired the amulet at Christies London 10 July 1991, lot 61.

Reference:  Amulets in hard stone such as diorite are much less common than their more typical faience counterparts.

Price:  $1,400.
