Cypriot Geometric Pottery Jug
Circa 750-600 BC
Description: Vibrant and attractive example of white painted ware from the Cypro-Archaic Period. Round-bodied jug with flat round spout, slender collared neck and loop handle atop a low ring foot. Concentric bands of varying widths encircle the upper portion of the body in shades of umber and brick-red. The shoulder is decorated with swirls and spirals in umber. The elegantly shaped neck and spout are accentuated with concentric bands on the inner and outer surfaces while the flat rim is decorated in a radiate triangle pattern. The separately applied convex handle is painted along the sides with three horizontal bands near the bottom and a tongue at the top where the handle meets the neck. Smooth beige clay with remnants of white slip.
Height: 4.5 in. (14.2 cm)
Condition: Intact with a minor surface chip below the handle. Overall, superbly preserved polychrome.
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Imre and Nicholas T. Molnar, acquired between 1960-1978. Also, by descent to a private American collector. Collector's tags adhered beneath.
