Evidence Emerges for Early Christians in China

An amazing discovery in the heart of China, reported by US News, provides compelling evidence that Christianity not only penetrated China but was embraced and sanctioned by the government during the 7th-9th centuries!

According to the report, an archaeologist using an old map marking ancient religious sites discovered that one of the sites was not laid out on an North-South axis as Chinese temples are. Instead, the building faced East as one would expect with a Christian church.

Confirming evidence was found inside. Amidst the rubble of centuries of broken tiles and delapidated wood beams, a classical Tang dynasty sculpture was discovered decorated at the bottom with the remains of an ancient statue of the Virgin Mary.

Until now, the only evidence of ancient Christianity in China has been the discovery in the 17th Century of the so-called "Nestorian Stone," a tablet that describes the arrival of Christian missionaries in 635 A.D. led by a Bishop Alopen.
