Fine Attic Geometric Period Pitcher
Circa Late 8th Century BC
Description: Attractive Attic Geometric Period trefoil lip pitcher. The vessel has a low squat round body with tall wide neck, trefoil lip and high-sweeping strap handle. Made from a finely grained, micaceous orange-buff clay with designs applied in a dark umber color. The body is decorated with six concentric bands of varying widths and a single band of large ovoid dots. The elegant neck bears vertical lines, cross-hatching and rounded columns of lattice pattern that are framed above and below by a thick line. The thin-walled trefoil mouth is accentuated by three bands that follow the wavy pattern of its shape. The high arched handle has faded remnants of horizontal stripes at top with a braided pattern that follows down the length to its terminal at the vessel's shoulder. On the base of the neck, just behind the handle is a potter's thumbprint with another fingerprint above and to the right that may have corresponded with the index finger. Wonderful example of provenanced Geometric Period pottery of rare shape.

Condition: Intact with well preserved polychrome. Minor surface chips to spout and expected abrasion to paint.
