Attic Black-Glazed LekythosCirca Mid 4th Century BC
Description: Black-glazed lekythos in miniature with decorative shoulder. The vessel has a tall bell-shaped body that tapers toward the offset flat ring base. A flat shoulder with narrow vertical neck, echinus-shaped mouth and short strap handle. The neck and shoulder of the lekythos are reserved with red slip and decorated with two concentric bands of rays. Underside of foot reserved. Height: 3.75 in. (10 cm) Condition: Minor repair. Provenance: Formerly in a private New Jersey collection. Background: Traditionally, lekythos refers to the one-handled jug with narrow neck and deep mouth that would have been filled with oils, unguents and perfumes commonly found at ancient burial sites.
