Fine Terracotta Archaic Protome
Circa 6th Century BC
Description: Beautifully modeled protome of a female bust in terracotta. The face is sculpted in the finest archaic style with an oval shape, wide forehead and full cheeks. Eyes are almond shaped, outlined in relief with brows indicated. The nose and ears are well indicated and slightly large, a customary attribute of these protomai. She wears the classic archaic smile with full lips slightly apart and turned upwards at the corners. The himation is wrapped over her head like a veil. Neat ushaped curls appear from under the himation and softly frame her face across the forehead. Her neck is elongated and the himation cascades along the edges on both sides. The clay is a soft beige color with a good deal of mica visible. The figure is hollow at the back. The top of the head is pierced through the himation. Custom perspex stand.
Height: 6.6 in. (16.5 cm)
Condition: Face superbly detailed, well preserved and intact. Two breaks across the neck neatly repaired.
Provenance: Formerly a British private property.
Background: Numerous terracotta protomes remain from antiquity. They are well known from Rhodes but were imitated in other centers as well.
