Evidence of Amputative Surgery in Ancient Rome

Scientists studying bones from a 2nd Century grave new Roman have uncovered what they believe is evidence that Roman surgeons performed amutative surgery.

The report follows discovery of a thigh bone serrated, at the end, that is thought to have belonged to a middle or upper-middle Roman male.

While other sculptural and artifact evidence of Roman amputation exists, this is reportedly the first evidence found in human remains. The scientists compared the level of sophistication used for the procedure to that of the battlefield amputations performed during the American Civil War.
