Large Ornate Stag Running RightCirca 4th-5th Century AD
Description: Roman North African lamp with superb, crisply moulded impression featuring a stag in profile with ornate high horns running to the right. On the shoulder of the lamp, a frieze of dogs chasing running rabbits. Finely detailed and uncommon. Height: 5.75 in. (145 cm) Condition: The lamp is intact and extremely well-preserved. A light coating of white calcification covering the bottom and small areas of the top. Provenance: Formerly a German property. Reference: See Lampes Chretiennes de Tunisie, by Abdelmajid Ennabli, lamp #365 for a related example. Background: Lamps depicting a stag and a Kantharos with handles have been linked to Old Testament references to Psalms (see #34, Light from the Age of Augustine by Annewies van den Hoek). She describes that the image of the stag and water vessel evokes Psalm 41:2 (Vulgate): "Just as a stag longs for the streams of water so my soul longs for you, God." She notes that Augustine cites this text frequently and applies the verse to those on their way to baptism, probably indicating that the image contains an implicit reference to the sacrament.
