Spectacular Byzantine Chi-Rho Silver/Gold Gilt Pendant

Circa 5th-8th Century AD    

Description:   A circular openwork pendant with 'XP' (the Greek letters Chi and Rho representing the first first letters in the name of Christ).  Two smaller Greek letters -- Alpha and Omega -- inserted between the arms of the Chi. Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, represent the words spoken by Christ in Revelation 21:6: "I am the Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end."   Flat backed. Suspension loop at the top.  Superb example of ancient Christian art/jewelry.  Wearable. 

Height:  1.25 in (3.3 cm) from top of suspension loop.
Weight:  7.19 grams

Condition:  Extremely fine condition. Traces of original gold gilt within the design, especially in the crevices of the Alpha and Omega.
