Large Apulian Lidded Pyxis with Owl, Head of a Fashionable LadyCirca 4th Century BC
Description: Large, ornately decorated globular lidded pyxis decorated on both sides with a slightly differing female profile head of a Lady of Fashion with palmettes in between. The lower half of the pyxis is decorated with an owl in 3/4 view and a dove about to take flight, with simple floral elements and two large palmettes with scrolls. Details highlighted in yellow and white. A very striking and substantial example of Greek South Italian pottery. Height: 7.5 in (19.1 cm) Condition: Intact with a very few minor spots of paint loss and normal small chips on the inner rim of lid. Few areas of mineral deposits and root marks on the surface. Provenance: Formerly in New York collection, also ex-Sothebys, Feb 8, 1985, lot #362. Price: $6,500
