Terracotta Reclining Figure of Parthian Goddess

Circa 2nd Century AD

Description: Fine terracotta reclining mother goddess shownin a frontal position resting on her left arm, right arm across her belly. The figure is adorned with a conical headdress and ornate necklace. Textured detail on the garment. Fine-grained pinkish-buff clay with flecks of mica. Back is smooth. Custom museum-quality removable display stand.         

Height:  4.1 in. (10.4 cm)
Length:  3.8 in. (9.7 cm)

Condition:  Intact as shown with chip to headdress and light wear.

Provenance:  Formerly an ex-British property.

Background:  Reclining humanistic figures first appear in Parthia after Greek influence spreads through the Near East starting with the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
