Large Gnathian Black-Glazed Jug with British Museum Letter

Circa 300-280 BC

Description:  Large, elegant, blackglazed Gnathian Ware jug of uncommon shape decorated in ochre and white slip, with a central band of ivy leaf decoration interspersed with flower heads between two double bands, with a horizontal band of dots below. The neck is enlivened with dashes on a central band tied in a loop at the front. Quite possibly from Paestan, rather than the more common Apulian region. Includes copy of British Museum letter.

Condition: Intact.

Provenance: UK private collection by decent from his great uncle who acquired it between 1920-1970.

Background: Accompanied by a letter from the British Museum noting they would be happy to accept the jug as a donation "especially since we do not have an example like the jug in our collection."

Price: $3,500
