Elegant Gnathian Swan Epichysis

Circa 340-320 Century BC

Description:  Elegant black-glazed Gnathianware epichysis with lively swan. The vessel has a teardrop-shaped body atop a tiered round foot, long narrow neck, slender furled spout with molded faces on either side and high squared convex handle. The body is decorated with a swan with outstretched wings. Great attention to detail has been paid to the bird with its long wing feathers, beak, eye, feet and shorter feathers of the wing picked out by gold applied to the white paint. The bird is flanked by white and gold foliate spirals. Above and below the scene are various decorative bands consisting of egg-and-dart pattern, chevrons, dotted lines and thin lines of incision, all accented in yellow and umber. Thick reserved line offsets the foot from the body and is covered with a dark red wash as is the underside of the foot. Fine example, the epichysis being one of the most beautiful of South Italian Greek pottery shapes.

Height:  8.25 in. (21 cm)

Condition: The spout expertly reattached, otherwise intact and pristine!

Provenance: Formerly in the Leo Mildenberg Collection of Animals in Ancient Art, the most important 20th Century collection of ancient animal art.

Published: As no. 150 in Aus Noahs Arche, Tierbilder der Sammlung Mildenberg aus fünf Jahrtausenden, Part IV (1996) by G. Zahlhaas.

Background: The swan was also associated with Zeus. As Zeus was fond of taking on the forms of different animals in pursuit of women, so he appeared as a swan to Leda in effort to seduce her.
