Extremely Fine Attic Black-Glazed Kylix

Circa 5th Century BC

Description:  Large Attic drinking vessel with exceptionally lustrous surface and elegant shape. The wide bowl has an offset everted rim, short stem and wide splayed foot. The foot is reserved except the black inner surface as well as the inside of the handles. The vessel was misfired in antiquity causing a dark red color on one side. Ancient repair at foot. Extremely interesting and rare to preserve the ancient repairs (see below) suggesting that the cup was prized in antiquity.  Beautifully preserved surface.

Rim Diameter:  7.8 in. (20 cm), excluding handles
Height:  3.5 in. (9 cm)

Condition:  Complete, and professionally conserved. Also repaired in antiquity as evidenced by the pair of drill holes which would have been used to take ancient bronze staples. The staples were probably covered in antiquity with a painted clay patch to hide the repair. Lustrous surface.

Background:  An offset lip was common in kylices as it enabled more comfortable drinking.

Provenance:  Formerly in an East Coast private collection acquired in the 1990s.

Price:  $ 3,750
