Substantial British Bronze Age Spearhead

Circa 1200-800 BC

Description:   Substantial British Bronze Age socketed spearhead with leaf-shaped blade, narrow at the tip of the blade, gradually widening and then narrowing again toward the base. Both surfaces of the blade have a large, dominant, rounded central midrib which begins at the tip and extends the length of the blade widening toward the base and forming the socket at the end. There are two, now damaged, peg holes though the base of the hollow socket. A sturdy attractive example of Bronze Age European weaponry.

Height:  9.75 in. in diameter (24.5 cm)

Condition:  The spearhead is intact except for minor damage to one side of the socketed end as visible in photo and a tiny chip to the tip of the blade, both probably the result of use on the battlefield.  Attractive mottled gray-green patina.

Provenance:  Formerly in a private Midwestern (USA) collection specializing in Bronze Age weaponery.

Reference:  See See Antiquities from Europe and the Near East int eh Collection of Lord McAlpine of West Green, by Arthur MacGregor, no. 11.46 for the type from Britain.

Price:  $ 1,200
