Etruscan Decorated Pottery "Genucilla" BowlCirca 3rd Century BC
Description: Fine example of a well-documented type of Etruscan footed bowl of buff color clay with depression and rim decorated with a standard black pattern. The type comes from the so-called "Genucilla" group, a genre of Etruscan pottery named from one example bearing under its foot the ancient graffito P. Genucilla. This bowl belongs to the star variety of Genucilla vessels named for the star pattern in the medallion. A repeating pattern of three dots interspaces the star pattern. The medallion is bordered by a nearly flat, broad rim enhanced with five cresting waves. The turned down lip and the molded rim of the foot are painted black and a broad black band encircles the bowl on the exterior surface. An important Etruscan type. Diameter:
5.5 in. (14 cm) Condition: Intact, usual wear. Provenance: Formerly in a European private collection assembled between 1973 and 1982. Reference: See similar examples in Etruscan Red-Figure Vase Painting at Caere by Michael Del Chiaro, page 64 and plate 67. Price: $ 950
