Cypriot Double Bowled VesselCirca 1900-1650 BC
Description: A wonderful example of a rare and highly individualized type in the repertoire of ancient Cypriot pottery. Multi-use vessels were popularized in the Bronze Age by ingenious Cypriot potters striving to invent ever more interesting and creative shapes. Each bowl has a buff background enlivened with reddish-brown painted decoration. The patterns are not symmetrical, rather each bowl has its own design. The tall upright wishbone handle of the vessel compliments the petite round bowls. A distinctive and scarcely seen type. Height: 5.25 in. (13.3 cm) Condition: Minor chip to the rim, otherwise intact though the handle appears to have been reattached. Painted decoration is attractive and well-preserved. Provenance: Formerly in a European private collection formed mainly in the 1970s. Also ex-Sothebys London 1975. Reference: See Desmond Morris's The Art of Ancient Cyprus, 1985, page 93 for a similar genre of Bronze Age vessels with central handle. Price: $ 1,750
